I weigh 8st 5 and have been taking 400mg about two and a half years, no mention of it being too much. Glenys.

Amanda,

I also get deposits on my lenses its apparently a calcium build up. I discovered this many years ago and swapped to daily disposables which is far more hygenic. So as far as I am concerned it doesnt have anything to do with RA.

Best regards

Hi
I have found this particular post very useful as I too am about to start hydro...
Trying to catch up on all your posts as I have been having rather a long flare and dare not use the computor for too long.
Love to you all

Hi Sue, there will be quite a few of us new to this DMARD. I'm only just into week 3, 400mg. Haven't suffered any ill effects (touch wood). I feel a lot better than I did a few weeks ago but think this is the depo I had at the beginning of December still working. It might be worth asking your rheumy for one if you are having a flare. I'm glad I did.

Hi, I started on hydroxy 18 months ago as an addition to my methotrexate, not bad at first but i did get psoirasis, bad heads and tinnitus, which I must admit I blamed on hydroxy, the headaches have now got so bad along with the pain in my eyes, (I have had them checked) I contacted my Rheumy nurse and I am not know taking it. My next appointment is in four months so we will make a call then. I am on larger amounts of prednisolone at the moment so I have not yet felt any difference to my arthritis problem.

Hi all

I saw my GP yesterday and she has kept me on the morphine patches. She was also mad that my rheumy appointment was cancelled for today and i now have one this Friday.

Fingers crossed i may get to start the MTX.

I hope everyone is okay and managing with this cold weather.

Love Shirley

Hi Hydroxy gang,

Just wondered if anyone else had experienced blurred vision whilst on these? My eyes are really blurred after I have been reading and when I am tired. I'm not worried that it's anything to do with retina problems as no gaps in vision or change in colour vision or anything but my eyes feel even drier than ever (keep forgetting to take artificial tears to work), just wondered if anyone else had this and how you are all getting on.

Hi Julie,

I also find my eyes become blurry after reading which is TERRIBLE as I read often! LOL

Also, my night vision is most definitely affected and I am going to raise this with the rheumy as I feel unsafe driving around at night sometimes!

(and no this is not when I have had a bottle of red..............ha ha)

How's the RA on it, any improvement?

Much love,

Amanda

Hiya Julie,

I raised the same problem with my Rheumy last week. He said it was unlikely to be caused by the Hydroxychloroquine and more likely to be related to RA. He asked if I had a dry mouth too. In his copy letter to me he wrote, "she has been getting painful red eyes and I suspect this is related to her recent rheumatoid arthritis activity rather than any medication. She is due to have her eyes checked this week and I have given her some Viscotears."

The optician said she'd never seen anyone with eye damage on Hydroxy, even after taking it for 12 years or so and prescribed different eye drops. To cause damage, small particles of the drug would build up in your eyes.

Having said that, I still believe my eyes deteriorated a few days after starting Hydroxy, but Viscotears are helping. They go in as a gel and on contact go to a liquid, so no mess running down your face.

I started seeing blurry bits in my left eye shortly after starting hydroxy.. the only way I can describe its as if I have to refocus.. for those who wear contacts, you'll know what I mean when I say its as if you've moved your eyes from left to right and the contact lense hasn't quite caught up.

Mentioned it to my optician who said my eyes were all ok... in fact my vision had improved from last year. To be on the safe side he decided to refer me to the eye hospital.

Seems my blurred vision is a mixture of things but its definitely not to do with the hydroxy. I was diagnosed as being anemic back in September and went onto iron tablets.

I'm used to seeing little black spots floating past with the anemia but when I got the blurred vision I panicked Scared

The doctor explained that I have small pieces of debris that ‘float’ in the vitreous humour of the eye. It can be quite common and as RA can affect tissue etc plus make you more prone to anemia, you tend to notice floaters.

I found some good info on the NHS site

He's told me to just keep an eye (scuse the pun) on things... that if I start experiencing flashing or severe headaches then I need to go back. This is because there is a history of cataracts in my family plus my mum recently had a macular hole (a small hole in the macula which is in the centre of the retina)

Sometimes my eyes will feel tacky, so I have to stretch my eyes open wide and this is usually a sign that they are dry so I pop in some of the artificial tears.

Thanks very much for your replies - so reassuring. I've been using viscotears and they do help.

Tigg - the way you describe the 're-focusing' thing is exactly how mine have been and I do get loads of floaters too.

The RA is not as bad as it was in December thanks Amanda but I can definitely feel the depo I had early December is wearing off but just my wrists and feet suffering at the moment. Have rheumy appointment on 10 Feb so think he will leave things as they are for the moment to give the hydoxy a bit longer.

Has anyone else felt any improvement?

I've been on it for about 10wks.... I have noticed I am not as stiff first thing in the morning. Still get the stiffness but don't shuffle anymore. I did have a steroid boost at Christmas so not sure how much of that is affecting me... I do get days when I feel like I've drank a gallon of coffee because I have more energy that I've known for quite a while

I want to join the hydroxy people -they sound cool!! ThumpUp

Have been on it for about 5 months, and to be honest RA has continued to deteriorate during that time, so it hasn't turned my life around. But it is the only DMARD I can tolerate, so I maybe even worse if I stopped it. Anyway, I am staying on it and starting Humira.

Will keep an eye on my eyes! RollEyes Supposed to be having a check up, but rheumy has forgotten - thankyou for reminding me to chase it up

Hi,Way back on this posting I mentioned I was getting headaches whilst taking Hydroxy, however,I later found out they were due to problems I have with a tooth root which my dentist was unable to remove(the root is very near the sinus which has caused the headaches so Hydroxy not to blame!)My rheumy consultant has dropped my Hydroxy to just one a day but my arm/shoulder pain seems to have got worse.Sad Saw my Gp last week and he gave me a steroid injection in the shoulder but it hasn't helped at all.I'm back on Naproxen and Omeprazole but I'm going to check with the rheumy nurse about going back on to the two Hydroxy.Having both RA and OA doen't help, two lots of different pain to contend with.
